Aereo TV Announces Expansion of Mobile Live Online Television ServiceLast week, Aereo TV announced a target date on which they will begin to offer their free over-the-air television channels available to online mobile device and computer users in 55 counties across Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina (the complete list is below). According to the company, the official launch date will be June 17th at which time the Aereo will offer new subscribers a free month of membership to test out the service.

This will be the third major metro market for the company which started in the New York area and recently opened in Boston as well. Aereo’s groundbreaking technology will offer more than 5.3 million Atlanta metropolitan-area consumers the ability to access the company’s innovative antenna technology to watch live television online.

Consumers who have gone online to Aereo’s web site and pre-registered will begin to receive invitations to join Aereo with general membership access expected to begin on June 24. After that date, Aereo will make membership available to all eligible consumers across the Atlanta designated market area (DMA), which includes more than 5.3 million consumers.

“We’re grateful and humbled by the continued support we’ve received from consumers for our technology,” said Aereo CEO and Founder Chet Kanojia. “The response and enthusiasm from consumers across all of our expansion cities has been phenomenal. It’s clear that consumers want more choice and flexibility in how they watch television and they don’t want to be fenced into expensive, outdated technology.

As we explained in an earlier article, Aereo’s antenna/DVR technology is available in a variety of plans, and is a really great way for those on the go to get mobile and other online access to watch television from their local stations, including local news and sports.

The company explains how their technology works for users on a variety of computer, tablet and mobile devices including ‘smart’ devices like iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Chrome, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Safari, Opera, AppleTV (via airplay) and Roku devices.

Aereo’s technology is based on an innovative remote (cloud-based) antenna/DVR system which makes watching television simple and user-friendly. “Using Aereo’s technology, consumers can pause, rewind and fast-forward any program that they are watching live, or save a program for future viewing. In Atlanta, there are 27 over-the-air broadcast channels accessible through Aereo’s antenna/DVR technology, including major networks such WSB-HD (ABC), WAGA-TV (FOX), WXIA-TV (NBC), WGCL-TV (CBS) and WPBA (PBS); special interest channels such as France24, BounceTV, MyTV, and AntennaTV; and Spanish-language broadcast channels such as Univision, MundoFox, and UniMas. In addition, consumers can also add Bloomberg Television, for a total of 28 channels.”
