Digital Books Outsell Paper

According to the information released from Amazon in its earnings report, the company now sells more books in an electronic form, for its Kindle format, than in printed form.

The proliferation of handheld devices which support the Kindle format, like those from Apple and those with the Android operating system, add to the millions of actual Kindle e-readers sold by Amazon. The result has been dramatic shift in how readers get their fix. Although it had been previously reported that digital books had surpassed hard cover sales at Amazon, this is the first time the numbers have also included paperback sales.

The data does not include the books which are royalty free and available for free download from Amazon and other internet sources. If these free e-books were included, the digital format would have surpassed the print format some time ago.

This trend is not good news for established physical bookstores. In a recent announcement, Borders said that they were restructuring and were delaying payments to creditors due to low revenues. Unless former brick and mortar giants like Borders can reinvent themselves to consumers, the future is bleak.
