Green Bay Brings the Lombardi Trophy Home

Vince Lombardi Trophy

Vince Lombardi Trophy

With their win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, in Super Bowl XLV, the Green Bay Packers silenced their mid-season critics and brought home the league’s most coveted trophy, named for the team’s legendary former coach Vince Lombardi.

The first half of the game was strongly dominated by the Packers who won the opening coin toss and elected to defer to the second half option. This strategy proved to be a good one after Pittsburgh appeared to be shifting the momentum their way with a scoring drive in the final 2 minutes of the second quarter. The touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Hines Ward helped to close the gap at the end of the first half.

At 21-10, Green Bay got the ball first in the second half and was able to keep their team focused towards their goal. The Steelers made an exciting game of it as the Packers offense stumbled with several dropped passes. With veteran receiver Donald Driver sidelined by injury early in the game, it was up to the rest of the receiver corps to get the job done. Also out of the game before the second half, top defensive cornerback Charles Woodson broke his collarbone while diving to break up a pass.

Despite the injuries to some key players, and despite the Steelers ability to score late in the 4th quarter, bringing them within striking distance, Green Bay was able to step up an add to their lead. With a final defensive stand on fourth down, with only a minute left in the game, the Packers won the game 31-25 and took the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay for the fourth time in their history.
