Once the Dragon spacecraft leaves the ISS, it will splashdown in the Pacific Ocean with over 3,500 pounds of NASA science samples and cargo on board.

Dragon is currently docked with the ISS on the Earth-facing side of the station’s Harmony module. To begin the undocking procedure, controllers at mission control in Houston will send commands to utilize and maneuver the Canadarm 2 robotic arm.

Once Dragon has undocked, it will execute three thruster firings to move away from the station, and once at a safe distance, the spacecraft will perform a firing of its engine to perform its deorbit burn. This will slow the Dragon and cause it to fall back through the Earth’s atmosphere leading to a splash down around 3:05 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California.

The Dragon Spacecraft has been docked at the ISS since its launch, on this third cargo mission, on April 18. Dragon carried about 5000 pounds of supplies to the ISS at launch.

Now, as the only resupply spacecraft designed to return to Earth intact, Dragon returns with science samples including human research, biology and biotechnology studies, physical science investigations and education activities, plus some crew supplies, vehicle hardware and spacewalk equipment.
