From the video below of the lego man, who has drawn a lot of media attention, we can see that his name is Ego Leonard, but exactly where he came from is still something of a mystery.
The front of Ego’s shirt reads, “NO REAL THAN YOU ARE.”
Initial thoughts centered on the fact that an new theme park, “LEGOLand”, recently opened near Orlando in what used to be the Cypress Gardens tourist attraction. Many assumed that the ‘LEGO Man’ was likely a publicity stunt to help promote the new park which opened just last week.
Now it appears more likely the this fiberglass man-sized lego character is the creation of a Dutch artist with the same name. To investigate, local newspaper, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, contacted Leonard via email who responded with, “I am glad I crossed over. Although it was a hell of a [swim],” the email read. “Nice weather here and friendly people. I think I am gonna stay here for a while.”
The artist’s web site also contains the words on the front of the giant toy man, “NO REAL THAN YOU ARE.” According to reports similar Lego figures have previously washed up on beaches in Holland and England in 2007 and 2008.
Jeff Hindman, the man who found ‘Lego Man’ on the beach, will become the new owner if he is not claimed within the next 90 days. If he gets to keep it, after it is released from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Hindman says that he will likely, “put it on eBay.”
