New FDA Labels for Meat

As part of the push to promote a healthier lifestyle for Americans, the Department of Agriculture has announced that it will require nutritional information to be added to labels on meats. The change will go into effect at the start of 2012.

Much like the information currently available on a box of just about any other type of processed food, packaged meats including beef and poultry will be labeled with details including calories, cholesterol and fat contents. The labels will also break down the fat contents into total and saturated fats which will help the public gain a better understanding of what really is “lean” ground beef.

According to industry experts the labeling will cost the industry and estimates $11 million per year. An number according to experts which is minor when compared to the revenue of the industry overall.
