At perhaps the worst time of year for it, the FDA announced a recall on, of all things, gingerbread houses. The recall on fully assembled and packaged gingerbread houses were manufactured by
. In the recall the FDA indicates that the tainted houses have been linked to some recent outbreaks of staphylococcus aureus food poisoning. While not fatal, the bacteria can cause vomiting and diarrhea in addition to stomach discomfort.
The recall covers 23 states where the holiday treats were sold throught various online and physical retail outlets. The contaminated houses appear to have been sold after the start of November and have been connected to about one hundred cases of illness.
As part of the recall retailers are being contacted in order to get the items off of the shelves. For disposal of the items, the FDA recommeds that the public wrap them in a sealed container. This will help to ensure that they are not inadvertantly consumed by animals who would fall ill as well.
