One of the best kept secrets in Hollywood may have been that Oprah Winfrey has a half-sister. In fact, not even Oprah herself was aware of the fact until a little more than a year ago.
During the tear-filled show on Monday, Oprah revealed that her mother, Vernita Lee, had given up her daughter, named Patricia, for adoption. Patricia is a younger sister to Winfrey, born in 1963, and found out about the secret herself in 2007, but never came out in public about the issue.
When Oprah’s parents separated and she was living with her father, her mother gave birth to Patricia. Unable to afford raising her daughter, Lee was forced to give up her rights to Patricia who had been in and out of foster care. This information was never revealed to Oprah until recently.
Winfrey commented on her sisters character during the show saying, “There have been few times have I have been anywhere and not been sold out…She never once thought to go to the press. She never once thought to sell the story.”
