What had been a mystery, since the beginning of the year, has been revealed and removed from sight. Shortly after the New Year, reports and pictures surfaced about a 650 pound grand piano which had mysteriously appeared on an isolated sandbar in the middle of Biscayne Bay in Florida. No one knew how or why the piano was placed there.
It turned out that a 16 year old high school student, named Nick Harrington, put the piano on the tiny island with help from his father and their boat. The student said that he had placed the piano there with the intent to film an artistic video of the instrument with the Miami skyline in the background. The hope was that the video would set him apart from other students in his college application. Although, some pictures were take of Harrington pretending to play the piano after it was set on fire, the video was never produced.
Until the boy’s recent admission, the piano had become a mystery after it was left behind and ultimately discovered in its remote location by boaters. Unfortunately for the teen, under Florida law, it is a third-degree felony to dump an object greater than 500 pounds. Because of his age and his artistic intent, the state officials have been lenient with the student, who could have faced a $5000 fine and up to five years in prison. Harrington was instructed to remove the piano from the sandbar, but a salvage company recently beat him to it.
