The company’s phone which docks with a laptop keyboard/display has fallen somewhat short in the eyes of critics the first time around. Later versions are expected to perform better and win over the analysts. The concept was received well at the CES 2011 earlier this year. The novel device gives users the functionality of a laptop with the on-the-go portability of a smart phone.
“In the Android ecosystem, there is a need for us to differentiate,” said Sanjay Jha, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility during the earnings conference call last week. “Atrix devices with the Webtop and lap-dock we really think there is an alternative way of viewing the convergence between mobility and computing. And we will continue to focus on that.”
The company indicated that they will continue to expand on the lap-dock device concept with a wider range of devices and pricing for consumers and businesses. One idea under consideration is to allow the Atrix to access a quad-core processor within the laptop when docked to boost performance.
