So far 9 people plus the pilot, 74 year-old Jimmy Leeward, are confirmed dead in the wake of the plane crash at the 2011 Reno Air Races last week. There are still dozens of spectators who are in serious or critical condition at hospitals following the crash.
The NTSB is still investigating the crash of the World War II fighter aircraft which was highly modified as a race plane. Aiding the NTSB in their investigation has been a vast amount of amateur video and pictures in the moments leading up to the crash.
The aircraft itself, known as the “galloping ghost” was fitted with a camera on the nose of the plane. Investigators will use all of this information, plus a memory card in the flight data recorder, along with other witness accounts to determine the cause of the accident.
