According to the latest reports, former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich remains optimistic about his appeal. However as of today, 55 year-old Blagojevich is scheduled to being serving the first day of his 14-year sentence in a federal prison in Colorado.
Blagojevich was found guilty of charges of corruption related to his time as the Governor of the state of Illinios. Blagojevich was arrested outside of his home by FBI agents on the morning of Dec. 9, 2008.
The arrest came after several months of wire-taps on Blagojevich’s telephones which showed that the governor was trying to sell the Senate seat which had been vacated by President Barack Obama. According to the charges, Blagojevich was offering up the Senate seat in exchange for political favors and donations.
After two very public trails over the last three years the 14 year prison sentence was handed down from U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel.
“Everything I talked about doing when it came to campaign fundraising and political horse trading I believed was on the right side of the law,” Blagojevich said to reporters outside of his home this week. He continued, “The decision went against me. I am responsible for the things that I’ve said… I accept that decision as hard as it is. And the law as it stands right now is that I have to go do what I have to go do. And this is the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to do.”
A father of two daughters to 14, Blagojevich and his wife took spent the day with the family at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo on Tuesday of this week. The former Illinois Governor indicated that is was difficult to find the right words to explain his jail sentence to his girls saying, “It’s hard for me to say that I have to go to prison.”
