Perhaps not since NFL quarterback Joe Theismann broke his leg during a game against the N.Y. Giants, have we seen such a horrific and clearly painful injury during a sporting event as was witnessed during today’s Louisville vs. Duke basketball game during the march madness elite eight playoff game. In the video below, Louisville guard Kevin Ware landed awkwardly on his right leg, trying to block a shot, and leg clearly broke in half below the knee.
We caution that if you watch the video of Louisville’s Kevin Ware leg break injury, be prepared as the video is graphic. The players from both teams were visibly shaken as Ware lay on the court with the broken half of his right leg dangling, only connected by the skin through with the bones of the upper half of his shin can be seen stretching the skin.
Clearly this had to be extremely painful for Kevin Ware, but after the game the Louisville coach Rick Pitino said that, despite the agony, Ware told his team to win the game – which they did. Pitino said of Ware that he is quite an amazing young man, and that he expects Ware to come back from his injury.
With the win over Duke, the Louisville team now moves on to the Final Four in the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament that is March Madness.
During the game, the announcers mentioned that Joe Theismann sent a tweet to Ware which read, “Watching Duke/Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware.”
