There are reports of two explosions that injured dozens of spectators near the finish line of the 117th running of the Boston marathon. A first explosion occurred around 2:50pm near the intersection of Boylston and Exeter streets. The first explosion happened across from the Lenox Hotel and the second blast was about 15 seconds later about 50 yards away. A third explosion was reported at JFK Library.
It is unknown at this time if the third explosion at the library is related but is currently being treated as such.The injured are being taken to nearby Massachusetts General Hospital. Store fronts have been blown out, and there have been reports of dozens of injuries people gathered near the finish line. It is being said that the explosions could be felt from blocks away. An accurate number of injured has not been confirmed yet but there are reports of two deaths and at least 49 injured.
The Boston Marathon was established in 1897 and is one of the six World Marathon Majors. The event typically attracts an estimated 500,000 spectators and requires certain qualifying times for runners to compete. The course winds throughout downtown Boston as well as several outlying cities ending near Boylston Street.
