It was at about 8PM local time last night when the world’s largest aircraft, an Airbus A380 struck the tail of a much smaller Bombardier CRJ700 as it taxied behind the CRJ. The Air France Airbus was taxiing on the ramp area when the smaller CRJ, which was a Comair flight operating for Delta Air Lines, was pulling into a gate. The CRJ was not quite at the gate, waiting for ramp personnel to marshal them in, when their tail was hit by the Airbus.
The impact spun the CRJ like a top a full 90 degrees, just missing a person on the ramp who was walking out to escort the aircraft into the gate. In the video, the ramp person can be seen jumping back as the CRJ rotates violently.
According to reports there were not injuries on either aircraft. The Air France aircraft has about 485 passengers and 25 crew members on board heading for Paris, while the Delta flight had 62 passengers and four crew members on board.
The A380 has substantial damage to the tip of the wing, and the CRJ is being inspected to evaluate any damage beyond the impact site on the tail.
