Billionaire Carlos Slim Helu is the world's richest person.

According to the Forbes top 20 list for the wealthiest people, Carlos Slim Helu has surpassed Bill Gates (#2) and Warren Buttett (#3) to be named the richest person in the world.

According to the Forbes report there are currently 1,210 billionaires in the world with a combined net worth of $4.5 trillion. Helu tops the list with a net worth of $74 billion. This is well ahead of Gates and Buffett who are valued at $56 billion and $50 billion respectively.

Helu gets most of his wealth from his ownership in América Móvil, a huge Latin American wireless operator, as well as his position as the largest shareholder in the Mexican telephone company Telmex. With his positions in these companies, and the recent increase in the Mexican stock market of nearly 20%, Helu’s wealth has skyrocketed.

Others making up the top 10 in the billionaire list are Bernard Arnault, Larry Ellison, Lakshmi Mittal, Amancio Ortega, Eike Batista, Mukesh Ambani, and Christy Walton & family in sequential order.
