An award winning filmmaker and writer, Bud Greenspan, who was perhaps best known for his many Olympic documentaries, died at his home in New York at the age of 84 on Christmas Day.

Among his many accomplishments were eight Emmy awards, a Peabody award, and for his work on his well known documentaries, the Olympic Order award from the International Olympic Committee. This is the highest award for the IOC. Also honoring his work, the US Olympic Hall of Fame inducted Greenspan into the ranks as a special contributor.

Greenspan, who had Parkinson’s disease, is survived by his business partner and companion Beffa and his sister, Sarah Rosenberg. While he had no children, Greenspan had been married. His wife, Constance Anne “Cappy” Petrash, died in 1983 of cancer.  During an interview Greenspan spoke of his late wife, “We didn’t have children and she would say, ‘The films will be our kids. … They’ll live long after we’re here.’ And that, in a sense, is immortality, and that is exactly what I think we’re here for, to leave something for this generation and generations not yet born.”
