Cam Newton wins 76th Heisman Award

It’s official. Despite what has been a cloud of controversy surrounding him and his school, Cameron Newton has just been awarded the 76th Heisman Trophy. Newton’s nearest competitor, Andrew Luck, lost by well over 100 votes. As many expected Cam Newton won overwhelmingly.

Newton had come under scrutiny this season as the NCAA investigated some possible “pay for play” activities. Newton was cleared and allowed to continue to play for Auburn, eventually leading them to a wining season, and next will lead them to the upcoming BCS championship game later this season.

During his acceptance, Newton gave thanks to God first then to his parents and then his coaches, in that order. While most of the scrutiny this season was due to some alleged activities of his father, Newton specifically singled his father out during his speech saying, “… my Dad, I love you.” Additional thanks, received with applause, were given to the U.S. troops overseas.
