The mystery surrounding the sudden halt to the Casey Anthony trial was revealed yesterday morning as Judge Belvin Perry opened the proceedings. The issue was the competency of Casey Anthony to continue.
Before the jury was let back into the courtroom on Monday, the judge addressed the court to explain that the Defense had concerns about the competency of their client, Casey Anthony, to continue to stand trial. Under law, a person must be considered competent enough to aid their attorney with their defense in order to stand trial in a court of law.

To make the determination, the judge ordered three separate evaluations of Casey Anthony, by trained psychologists, over the weekend. The reports from all three indicated that she was indeed competent to continue. Some believe that this may have been a last ditch attempt by the defense to move for a mistrial.
After the explanation, the trial resumed as the defense continued to call more of the prosecution’s witnesses and attempt to poke holes in their statements and evidence. Many analysts believe that the defense could wrap up its case by the end of the week, turning the trial over to the jury for deliberation.
