The swim involves crossing 103 miles of ocean filled with very powerful currents from the Gulf of Mexico, jellyfish, and a lot of sharks. Nyad, who had walked away from swimming for over 30 years is back in the water once again, and again without a shark cage to protect her.
In the video, Diana Nyad is seen as she begins her 60 hour swim in the waters at a marina in Havana. If all goes well Nyad will come ashore in Key West at the end of her journey. Shortly after beginning the swim Friday evening, Diana’s twitter feed indicated that she was having some problems with the jellyfish but was continuing. The message read, “Diana has been stung by what we believe is a moon jelly. She is trying to clear herself of tentacles and continue the swim.”
Diana currently holds the world record for the longest open-water swim. It is a record that she set over 30 years ago when she swam 102.5 miles from the Bahamas to Florida back in 1979.
