In a joint publication from the US Department of Agriculture and the department of Health and Human Services, the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010” edition has been released.
The one hundred and twelve page publication is an update to the 2005 edition. In addition to the recommended daily intake amounts of calories, fat and other dietary numbers, the guide also includes some practical appendices for consumers.
In the appendices, there is information on kitchen hygiene, proper refrigeration temperatures and how to cook safely. Also included are sections specific to children, women who are pregnant, and other high risk groups.
Recommended guidelines include: a Fat intake of 20-35 percent of total calories, Saturated fat less than 10 percent of total calories, and Trans-fats less than 1 percent of calories. Daily target for Cholesterol is less than 300 mg. Also, 14grams of Fiber per 1,000 calories, and Potassium is 4,700 mg.
For Sodium intake, less than 1,500 mg is recommended for all African-Americans and those with hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (including children), as well as persons older than 51. Less than 2,300 mg is the recommended limit for everyone else. 2.5 cups of Fruits and vegetables and less than 3 oz of refined grains complete the list.
