Off-Shore Windfarms

The U.S. Department of Energy announced that it has identified the areas which are likely candidates for the installation of a group of off-shore wind farms. According to the DOE, the areas at the top of the list are off of the coasts of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

As part of his energy independence initiative, President Obama laid out a goal of generating at least 80% of the county’s electricity from clean energy by the year 2035. The electricity from these wind generators off of the east coast of the U.S. will be part of the Energy Department’s attempt to meet that goal. With assistance from energy credits and other government incentives for energy businesses, wind farms have been popping up all over the country.

In this latest announcement, the DOE has indicated that they will be putting over $50 million into the development of the off-shore energy wind farms over the next five years. Among other things, the money will be used to help make the technology for wind power less costly.
