Endeavour Prepares for Final Launch

While Space Shuttle Discovery is in orbit completing its last mission for NASA, the space agency announced the planned roll out of Endeavour for what will be its last mission as well.

Not only will this be Endeavour’s final mission, it is also the last of any scheduled launches for the Space Shuttle fleet. The roll-out from the Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB, to Launch Pad 39A is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The launch of Endeavour on STS-134, will carry six astronauts to the International Space Station. The launch is currently scheduled for April the 19th.

During the 14-day mission to the space station, Endeavour’s astronauts will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a particle physics detector designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. The crew also will deliver the Express Logistics Carrier 3, a platform that carries spare parts that will sustain station operations once the shuttles are retired later this year.
