In a effort to ensure the health safety of the American public congress has been pushing to get a bill passed that would be the first major overhall of the FDA’s food safety program in nearly a century.
The bill is designed to give the FDA a much broader set of powers which will allow for better and more frequent inspections of plants where food is processed. Additionally, the agency would have the power to force a manufacturer to initiate and recall, and also includes stricter standards for food imported from other countries.
The bill was already passed by the senate once only a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, when the senate wrote the bill they included a tax provision which, by law, was something that has to originate in the House of Representatives. After making the appropriate edit to the bill, the revision has been sent to the House for approval.
