Ford will be rolling out a proven technology for non-hybrid gasoline engine vehicles as early as 2012 according to a recent announcement from the auto maker. Since the government bailout of several auto makers in the U.S., of which Ford was not one, the auto giant has led the return of the American auto industry through innovation and quality. The proof of their success has been in Ford’s stock price which has climbed above $16 per share after being down around $1 at the low of the economic crisis a few years ago.
Technology has played a big role in Ford’s success. In addition to making the vehicles compatible with mobile computing and entertainment devices, Ford has rolled out a number of hybrid vehicles which boast improved fuel efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
A part of the technology which has been successful in the hybrid vehicles, known as Auto Start-Stop, will soon become available on non-hybrid vehicles as well.
The concept is simple. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine is automatically turned off, and then automatically restarted once the driver takes their foot off of the brake. Ford has added a more robust battery and starter to ensure reliability and a seamless experience for the driver, as well as systems which maintain the climate control functions of the vehicle. Depending on the type of driving and time normally spent at idle, the technology will boost fuel efficiency by 4-10 percent.
