As reported in the video below, from local CBS News 5, former Major League Baseball player Frank Castillo was found dead on Monday after disappearing on Sunday while swimming in Bartlett Lake.
The 44 year old Castillo was reportedly on the lake with a friend on pontoon boat on Sunday. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Castillo went for a swim and never came back to the surface.
Police and rescue divers responded after a call was made by the friend to 911 around 2:30 PM on Sunday. After an unsuccessful search on Sunday, the divers eventually recovered Castillo’s body on Monday afternoon.
In a statement Castillo’s sister Denise Castillo Rhodes said, “Frank was a wonderful son, terrific brother and an extraordinary father to his two beautiful girls.” She continued, “Everyone who knew Frank loved Frank. We are devastated by this loss.”
Frank Castillo played MLB baseball over a 13-year career. Castillo was selected in the sixth round of the 1987 draft by the Chicago Cubs after high school. Castillo made his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 27,1991.
Castillo was later traded to the Colorado Rockies, and in 1998, moved to the Detroit Tigers. In 2004, Castillo received a World Series ring after pitching for the Boston Red Sox championship team. Castillo played his last final major league game as a Florida Marlin in 2005.
