Millions of Americans who are about to file their Federal Income Taxes, many in hopes of a refund, just got a break courtesy of the Free File Alliance and the IRS. The good news comes in the form of free federal tax preparation and e-filing software for online tax filing.
The program, which has been updated to help taxpayers navigate ‘Obamacare’ changes, is available to all Americans with a 2015 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $60,000 or less.
The free tax filing program comes thanks to a joint collaboration between the IRS and The Free File Alliance, a coalition of 14 industry-leading tax software companies.
“If you’re among the 70 percent of Americans making $60,000 or less, Free File is here to take the guesswork out of doing your federal taxes,” said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance.
“Free File has saved taxpayers more than $1 billion since its inception in 2003. We are proud to once again offer innovative and secure tax software at no cost to 100 million Americans. Tax time can be stressful, but Free File makes step-by-step help accessible to everyone making $60,000 or less.”
The hope is that this program gives eligible taxpayers a head start to prepare and e-file tax returns online before January 20, when the IRS officially opens tax season.
According to the press release, when used with direct deposit, Free File is the fastest way for taxpayers to receive their refunds.
This free tax filing services is accessible only through www.IRS.gov/FreeFile. From this web portal, taxpayers can choose from a variety of industry-leading tax software options in order to prepare and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost.
Additionally, Free File has been updated for 2015 in order to help Americans navigate tax changes related to the Affordable Care Act. Forms 8962 and 8965 are available across all Free File Alliance software offerings.
