For the Millions of Americans now looking for a way to file income taxes online for free, the Free File Alliance, a coalition of industry-leading tax software companies has partnered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide that free tax filing service.
According to the company, the 2014 Free File program will launch this Friday, January 17. As this free tax filing program goes live, every taxpayer with a 2013 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less can go online to complete and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost.
For those who exceed the income limits of the free tax filing options, Free File offers basic federal e-filing services with no income limitations. Referred to as Free File Fillable Forms, this basic e-filing service allows taxpayers who are familiar with tax law and need no preparation assistance to complete and file their federal income tax electronically.
“By providing online commercial tax preparation software at no cost, Free File has saved American taxpayers $1.2 billion since it began in 2003,” said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance. “Free File is the only service that allows users to access and compare free tax software options from more than a dozen top companies. With Free File, industry-leading tax software is all in one place, and it’s all free.”
This IRS Free File is available at www.irs.gov/freefile. For those who can’t, or don’t know how to file their taxes online, the Free File Alliance is also partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) – a walk-in service for low-to-moderate income taxpayers.
Free File software will be available at self-assist kiosks at VITA sites in 22 states.
