Hot across media outlets and the internet is information being released in the Louis Freeh Report which shows how Penn State officials including Joe Paterno ignored the sexual abuses being committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. According to the report, Penn State officials and others buried the sexual abuse allegations in order to protect the school and its football program from the bad press.
The Freeh Report, by former FBI Director Louis Freeh cites a ”culture of reverence” which existed for one of the nation’s most well respected football programs and its long time Hall of Fame coach. The report further indicates that Joe Paterno was more deeply involved and knew more than had been previously known.
Freeh was hired by the university’s trustees to investigate any potential for cover-up which may have existed within the university and staff. The complete Freeh report which contains all of the findings by Louis Freeh including just how much Penn State university leaders were aware of Jerry Sandusky’s conduct and abuse is available for download online.
In the report, Freeh referred to the behavior of Penn State officials as ”callous and shocking.” Freeh continued at a news conference in Philadelphia, ”Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State… The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”
As for the part which the head coach Joe Paterno, and symbol of the Penn State football program, may have had in any cover-up, Freeh said that Paterno ”was an integral part of this active decision to conceal.”
