As Hurricane Sandy continues to make its way up the eastern coast of the United States, all eyes and ears are on the projected path of the hurricane as well as the latest status updates from the National Weather Service indicating when and where the storm will make landfall in the Northeast.
Earlier today, the Governor of New Jersey declared and state of Emergency and issued evacuation orders for Atlantic City and the barrier islands along the coast. While the models vary slightly on the exact point of impact for initial landfall, it appears currently that the Delaware Maryland Virginia peninsula along with the coast of New Jersey and Long Island will bear the brunt of the initial impact and tidal surge.
The most current information from the National Weather Service indicates that center of Hurricane Sandy will make landfall by late Monday to early Tuesday, however high winds and rain from the storm will be felt much sooner. By Tuesday afternoon, the center of the Hurricane is expected to be over land near the Maryland Pennsylvania border. From here the storm will turn north and drive across New England over Wednesday and Thursday.
Airport and airline cancellations in the area are already beginning. United has cancelled some flights in and out of Washington Dulles and Newark on Monday. Additional cancellations will likely take place during the day on Sunday as the hurricane predictions and projected path models are updated.
