In a press release, it was announced that Saturday, October 12th, 2013 will kick off the inaugural Southernmost Marathon & Half Marathon, dubbed the “SoMo” in Key West Florida.
Runners in the races will follow a 26.2-mile or 13.1-mile route while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and scenic avenues of the United States’ southernmost city.
Surrounding the Key West Marathon are several days of events and activities running from Thursday through Monday, Oct. 10-14, 2013.
The full Key West “SoMo” marathon is to begin at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday with the SoMo half-marathon start to follow at 6 a.m. The start and finish lines for both are at Pat Croce’s Rum Barrel, 528 Front St., the event’s presenting sponsor.
The SoMo Marathon route features a flat, fast course that includes Key West’s historic Old Town and Atlantic Ocean shoreline, neighboring Stock Island and the Keys’ Overseas Highway to mile marker 9. Half-marathon contenders are to race along Key West’s Atlantic Ocean shore and through Old Town.
For those interested in taking part and running in the marathon, packets can be picked up at the Rum Barrel from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, or during a race expo from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. There will be prerace dinner specials offered at the Rum Barrel and other Key West restaurants.
