Intel released a statement announcing that it will build a manufacturing plant in Arizona this year. Between this new plant in Arizona, and its facilities in Oregon, the company estimated that it will create as many as 8000 jobs.
This new Arizona facility will be used to manufacture its next-generation microchips. The chips, which were announced last month, are referred to by the company as Sandy Bridge. Sandy Bridge chips feature 14-nanometer line-width transistors and microchip wafers of 300 millimeters and are expected to make up about one third of Intel’s revenue this year.
The facility is expected to be complete by 2013, and over that time the company expects to spend between six and eight billion dollars world-wide as part of an aggressive expansion plan. Other facilities which are part of the expansion are located in China and Israel.
