Despite the public outcry, and hundreds of thousands of petitioners last year opposed to retailers opening on Thanksgiving Day, Macy’s has announced that it too will open a day early to get in on the Black Friday shopping sales frenzy early.
Last year employees and consumers joined in protest and petitions to oppose retailers, including Target, Sears and Walmart, who forced employees to leave their family Thanksgiving dinners early by opening their stores at 8PM, the day prior to the traditional Black Friday.
The USA today reports that Macy’s will also open its stores at 8PM on Thanksgiving Thursday. The company said that consumers want the change, and that they feel forced to do so to remain competitive with other retailers during the biggest shopping day of the year.
Many feel that the retailers are going too far and allowing their corporate greed to win out over what is supposed to be a time to gather with family and give thanks for all that we have. Until one of these retail giants is willing to take a stand, however, it is likely that this trend will continue.
As many consumers announced their intention to no longer shop at any retailers who opened on Thanksgiving, one marketing expert noted that an announcement by a large retailer to keep its doors closed until Black Friday, could win them a lot of good press – and some consumers ready to spend.
