On Sunday night, the Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet aired a program called Mermaids : The Body Found. In the wake of the show, and during its airing comments, videos and images began flooding the internet saying that a mermaid body had been found and covered up by the Navy and other government agencies.
The Mermaid body show was actually just a fictional account of the discovery of an actual Mermaid body. All of the speculation and confusion seems to be from the way the program was structured. The program was presented in a documentary format. Many have compared the program to something like “The Blair Witch Project” film.
This is not the first time a fictional documentary like this has led to confusion. Several years ago, Discovery also aired a program chronicling a dragon. Viewers watching that program also got the impression that it was talking about a real discovery. Instead, just as is the case with Mermaids: The Body Found, the program was fictional.
While the film infact stated that is was fiction, its claim that parts were “based on some real events,” may have added fuel to the fire of rumors and speculation. To clear things up the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a statement saying that “no evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.”
