According to a recent statement from the nation’s space agency, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recently met with SpaceX CEO and Chief Designer Elon Musk at the SpaceX Rocket Development Facility in McGregor, Texas. The two were on hand to examine a piece of space history, SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule which became the first commercial space capsule to complete a mission to the International Space Station.

Musk is also the head of Tesla Motors, a leading designer and innovator in the industry of all electric vehicles. Musk earned his money by founding and then selling PayPal, and has since invested much of his personal fortune into the two companies he now runs.

While at the SpaceX facility in Texas, the two men thanked the more than 150 SpaceX employees for their role in the historic mission which was completed last month when the SpaceX Dragon capsule was successfully launched, rendezvoused with the International Space Station (ISS), delivered supplies and returned to Earth.

“The Dragon capsule is a tangible example of the new era of exploration unfolding right now,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. “Commercial space is becoming a reality as SpaceX and our other commercial partners look ahead to future missions to the space station and other destinations. I congratulate Elon Musk and the entire SpaceX team again for this historic milestone.”

In addition to delivering to the ISS, the Dragon spacecraft also returned with some 1,367 pounds of cargo. In fact, unlike other companies taking part in NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Program (COTS), the SpaceX Dragon is the only spacecraft capable of returning a significant quantity of science experiments and cargo from the station.
