NASA: Space Shuttle Enterprise Flight Delayed due to New York Weather

Early 1970's drop tests of Space Shuttle Enterprise: NASA

With Space Shuttle Discovery now at its new home at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum near the Washington Dulles Airport, the plan was to relocate Shuttle Enterprise from that location to a new home onboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York this week. Bad weather in the Northeast, however has caused NASA to postpone the move.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise, like all shuttles, is transported from place to place by hitching a ride on the back of a modified Boeing 747 dubbed the SCA or Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Once the move is rescheduled, the flight will take place and the plan calls for some low altitude flights over New York City to give everyone a good view of Enterprise before landing at JFK Airport.

After looking at the weather forecast on Friday, NASA managers, in consultation with the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum made the call to postpone and reschedule the move. NASA cited safety concerns for the SCA and the Shuttle Enterprise as the primary justification for the postponement.

Once a new date and time can be determined for the move, NASA manager will make that information public. The flight, including ceremonies and events on the ground can be watched online through streaming video from NASA TV, or on television for those with access to NASA TV.

More details about the flight can also be found in our earlier article about the relocation flight of Space Shuttle Enterprise.
