The landing of the NASA Curiosity rover on Mars is still on schedule for a touchdown on Monday. NASA television will carry the landing live. Additionally, viewers can watch the Curiosity landing online at the bottom of this page.
To give everyone an idea of what to expect during the entry to the Mars atmosphere and landing on the surface, NASA has prepared a video titled, “Grand Entrance.” The “Grand Entrance” video is narrated by Star Trek: The Next Generation star Wil Wheaton and shows the details behind what is being billed by NASA as the hardest planetary science mission to date.
The Curiosity rover weighs in at about 1-ton, is roughly the size of a car, and is essentially a robotic roving laboratory. Currently, the landing on the surface of Mars is on track to take place at 1:31 a.m. EDT on Monday Aug. 6.
After landing, Curiosity will begin a “two-year prime mission to investigate whether one of the most intriguing places on Mars ever has offered an environment favorable for microbial life,” according to NASA.
