It was only a matter of time before the one many most synonymous with everything related to the internet and technology, Google, entered into the exploding tablet PC arena currently dominated by the Apple iPad and the Amazon Kindle.
According to reports, the Google’s first tablet computer, the Google Nexus 7 was unveiled today at the Google I/O Developers conference in San Francisco. The Nexus will run on the newest Andriod 4.1 operating system from Google which has also been dubbed ‘Jelly Bean.’
The Google Nexus 7 tablet is actually a co-branded tablet computer in partnership with Asustek Computer. The tablet’s 7-inch screen features a 1,280 x 800 display resolution. Internally the Nexus 7 uses a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip, comes with 1GB of RAM and, in addition to other features like a gyroscope, accelerometer and GPS, the tablet also has a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.
While not a head-to-head competitor with the more expensive iPad, the Google Nexus 7 tablet is priced and configured to take over some market share of the popular e-reader tablet computer from Amazon – the Kindle Fire, as well as the Nook tablets from Barnes & Noble.
Orders for the Nexus 7 are already being accepted at Google Play and according to the reports, two versions are available with an 8GB model that retails for $199 and a 16GB model with a price of $249.
