The new iPhone 5 will feature several new upgrades over its predecessors. One of the biggest changes will be the transition to the iOS 5 operating system which includes wireless device setup and content syncing and enhanced email and Web-browsing apps.
The new iOS5 will also be released to work on earlier versions of the iPhone (4 and 3GS), as well as Apple’s very popular iPad. Another expected feature with the release of the iPhone 5 will include the integration of the upcoming iCloud service from Apple.
Some expected improvements to the iPhone 5 hardware include a bigger screen and slightly thinner profile, and an enhanced version of its rear camera over the 5 megapixel one found on the iPhone 4.
For those with a greater ‘need for speed’, the new iPhone is expected to include the more powerful Apple dual-core A5 processor. This is the same speedy processor found in the iPad and will allow for a better gaming experience as well as improved multitasking of apps.
This release will be the first time in years that Apple has rolled out anything new without Steve Jobs on the stage. Jobs resigned from his position as CEO in August for health concerns, but remains chairman of the board.
Tim Cook, former Apple chief operating officer who has taken over the CEO position, is expected to unveil the new iPhone.
