On this Veteran’s Day 2013, Operation Homefront, an organization dedicated to supporting our nation’s veterans and their families, is calling on Americans and veterans to share their stories to help honor the service of our veterans.
Dubbed “11 Stories in 11 Days: Honoring Veterans” the special event is aimed at highlighting some of the stories of courage and sacrifice which help to honor the service of America’s veterans. To understand the rationale behind the number 11, we take a look at the origin of Veteran’s Day.
President Woodrow Wilson declared that Nov. 11, 1919 as Armistice Day to honor World War I veterans. In later years, the holiday was later expanded to include all veterans and all wars. The choice of Nov. 11 stems from the Armistice with Germany, with the cessation of hostilities on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
“In the spirit and history of the day, this year we thought there’d be no better way to honor service to country than to highlight some of the veterans we’ve been so very fortunate to help, each with their own unique and compelling story of commitment and sacrifice,” said Jim Knotts President and CEO of Operation Homefront.
Starting today, Veteran’s Day 2013, and then continuing for 11 days, the agency plans to highlight a veteran whom they have come to know through the variety of support programs which they offer to support veterans.
“Getting to know these individuals and families is what we cherish, thanks to the generous support we receive from those like you who also seek to honor service and sacrifice to country,” Knotts said.
“I’m hoping that you will join in the conversation with us as we celebrate those veterans among us, by sharing stories of your own. Through Facebook or Twitter, please use the hashtag #11stories11days to share your own inspirational story of a veteran in your life.”
