Professional Soccer Players Launch Summer Tour of Innovative Soccer Skills Program Ideal for Urban Areas

It’s no secret that today’s youth are often not getting enough exercise. For children in urban environments, the problem is sometimes even worse due to limited areas for recreation. Two former English Premiership soccer players are aiming to change all of that however. In an effort to promote exercise, fun and the sport of soccer, Gary Blissett & Allan Cockram have developed and launched a program called Urban Cage Soccer.

“There’s a need for soccer in inner-city communities lacking access to wide open grassy fields. So we’re bringing soccer to the streets,” says Blissett who, like Cockram, grew up kicking tennis balls on the streets of inner-city Manchester and worked his way up to Europe’s professional soccer Premier League. The Urban Cage Soccer is designed to “simulate the confined, urban environments where greats like Pele and Ronaldinho learned their skills.”

As can be seen in the video, Urban Cage Soccer is a unique, high intense game played in a 9×6 yard urban arena. Requiring a minute amount of space, compared with traditional soccer fields, Urban Cage Soccer is fast, skillful and entertaining. The style of game play helps to develop confidence, speed, agility, rhythm and fitness in an extreme, fun environment.

In a press release, the two men explain the simple rules of the game. “We keep the game as free flowing and action-packed as possible to maximize momentum and endurance. Played either 1v1 or 2v2, this 2 minute game, using only skill balls, develops players ability quicker than any other concept. Spectators are so close they become part of the intense atmosphere.”
