This spring, thousands of people across the country will gather together and walk in order to raise money to fight cancer.
About Relay for Life:
One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life brings together communities across the nation each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember beloved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. This year marks the celebration of 25 years of Relay for Life.
Event Information:
In order to participate in the event, groups of people form teams to walk around the track. The events are typically held at high school tracks all over the country, and someone from the team must always be walking, while his or her teammates catch up on rest, eat, and visit with others. People who take part in Relay for Life typically find that it’s a very family-friendly and enjoyable occasion.
Participate in This Event:
A Corporate Sponsor:
Companies can become involved with Relay for Life by forming their own teams and/or by sponsoring a team. AZ Nissan dealers, for example, recently became sponsors at the corporate level. As it mentions on its Facebook page, the dealership was the Peoria Relay for Life’s first gold sponsor, which means they donated $2,500 to the event. As the Facebook post mentioned, the staff from AZ Nissan is always happy to find ways to give back to the community.
Group Participants:
In order to form a team, the Relay for Life website noted, people simply need to enter in their zip code in order to find their closest local relay event. They may then start their own team and use their own personal page to recruit and organize teammates of coworkers, friends, and family members. There’s no minimum number of participants required to form a team.
One of the most emotional moments takes place during the Survivors Lap, when cancer survivors take the first lap around the track and celebrate their victory over cancer. Everyone cheers wildly as the group walks proudly around the track, smiling and waving. For companies who have employees who’ve successfully battled cancer, the Survivor Lap can be a great way for them to recognize and applaud them.
Another moving portion of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony, which takes place once the sun goes down. Candles are placed and then lit inside personalized bags that are in honor of those who’ve lost their battle against cancer. The glowing bags are placed around the track and are a beautiful way for people and employees to remember friends, family and coworkers who’ve passed away.
