Rosetta Spacecraft Video: Comet Landing Site Selected for Philea Lander

Rosetta Spacecraft Video: Comet Landing Site Selected for Philea LanderLater this month, the world will watch a first of its kind as the Rosetta spacecraft and its Philea lander make a landing on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. This will be the first landing of a spacecraft on a comet.

Viewers can watch the Rosetta Spacecraft video below, during which the team made the final selection of a landing site for the Philea lander. The landing site was based on images and data which Rosetta has gathered since arriving in orbit around the comet back in August.

Managed by the European Space Agency (ESA), the project will set a milestone for space exploration and gather unparalleled science on comet composition.

On August 25, the team announced 5 candidate locations for evaluation as good potential landing sites. The team next had to investigate each to determine possible orbital and operational strategies for Rosetta if it were to send down the Philea lander to each site.

In mid-September the agency announced, via a press briefing, the selection of a primary landing site and a backup.

In the video, viewers can watch the Rosetta spacecraft team announce the landing locations and explain how the mission and its timeline will proceed from here.
