While it was long thought to be completely dry and devoid of any potential for life, discoveries over the years have led researchers to conclude that there is water on the moon. The water is not fluid as we know it on the earth. Without an atmosphere any liquid water would immediately vaporize into the vacuum of space.
The water on the moon is locked up in the rocks of the earth’s companion. Recent research indicates that the most likely source for this water is from comets which have rained down on the moon since its inception. Comets are believed by scientists to contain a great deal of water, and the moon water samples show the same properties as the water in the comets which scientific probes have examined.
The evidence lends itself to help scientists explain where much of the earth’s oceans of water likely came from. Without an atmosphere, most of the water, from comet impacts on the moon, was immediately lost to space. Only a small percentage was imbedded into the soil. On the earth however, the vast majority of the water from comets was trapped by the early atmosphere and created our oceans.
