Previous reports by Sony that 77 million accounts in their Playstation user database were accessed by hackers from April 17th to the 19th, were apparently not all of the customer information accessed. The company recently reported that there was an earlier hack accessing and additional 24.6 million accounts on the 16th and 17th.
In the recently discovered breach, of Sony Online Entertainment division, customer account data was obtained from Sony referred to as an outdated database from 2007. The information consisted of over twenty three thousand financial records for customers.
While the database is considered outdated by Sony, the data, including credit card and debit card numbers of the customers, may not be. Also accessed were over ten thousand customer records including bank account numbers, customer names, and customer addresses.
Sony is working with the FBI and internally to track down the responsible persons as well as improve their security to prevent another such breach in the future. On Monday, Sony shut down its SOE games portal while they work to secure their systems. The portal is accessed by customers via Facebook and Playstation 3 for popular games like “DC Universe Online”, “Free Realms”, and “EverQuest” to name a few.
In addition to an apology to its customers, Sony said that it will offer its customers an additional 30 free days on any current subscription plus one additional free day for each day their service is off line.
