Lady Liberty, and the statue is often called, was a gift to the U.S. by France in 1886. There is actually a smaller replica of the stature in France which was made at the same time.
A number of celebrities were on hand for the ceremony and celebration. In keeping with the meaning of the statue for many immigrants, the day began with a historic naturalization ceremony welcoming 125 of this countries newest citizens.
Alba Reyescruz, one of the 125 selected to gain their citizenship today, said during and interview, “It was great, like, I’m glad they picked me for this day. I don’t think everyone gets to be part of a ceremony like this on Liberty Island so I’m very proud that I was part of it.”
Among the guest speakers was film star Sigourney Weaver who read “The New Colossus.” This is a sonnet by Emma Lazarus that is actually on a plaque inside the statue of liberty.
In a move to bring the statue to life for millions, five webcams have now been mounted in the statue’s torch. Individuals can go to ellisisland.org to see the view of New York Harbor and Ellis Island from the cameras.
During the ceremony, Ken Salazar, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior said, “In America, the Statue of Liberty reminds us of the importance of diversity and the strength of diversity in our country.”
Although the statue was open for visitors today, access to the interior of lady liberty will be closed for renovation over the next year or so. The island itself will remain open to tourists however.
