On Thursday, the sun-n-fun fly-in and airshow in Lakeland, FL came to a halt as a line of severe thunder storms moved through Central Florida tossing many aircraft around the airport, causing severe damage to several. By Friday afternoon the event was back under way, and Saturday saw one of the biggest turn outs ever.
The fly-in is the second largest of its kind, second only to the annual fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Saturday’s afternoon airshow kicked off with fly-by’s, formation flights, and even some mock bombing runs by legendary World War II aircraft like the P51-Musting, Corsair, T-34s, and a B-24 to name a few. Next up was a demonstration flight by the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor aircraft.
Several well known aerobatic pilots thrilled the crowds next, including Shawn D. Tucker, one of the top performers in the country, in the Oracle Challenger II.
The air show portion of the day closed with a big finish as the Navy’s Blue Anglels aerobatic demonstration took to the skies. The team gave air show attendees a great performance in their six FA-18 Hornets. In the wake of the storms just days earlier, the afternoons weather was picture perfect. Skies were clear blue and temperatures were in the mid-80s with a constant light breeze. The show comes to an end this afternoon, but will be back again next year on March 27th.
