While there are a number of interesting and innovative vehicles at this week’s New York International Auto Show, much of the buzz is about a Flying Car from an company called Terrafugia, known as the Terrafugia Transition.
Flying cars have long been the dream and the promise of the future. Just ask anyone who grew up watching the Jestons. Well now it appears that after several successful test flights (watch the video below), the Flying Car is finally a reality in a production vehicle.
Terrafugia Inc., a Massachusetts based manufacturer said this week that its has been successful in flights with its prototype flying car. The company is committed to a goal of selling the flying car within the next year.
In one of its best demonstration flights, the four-wheel, two-seat “Transition” flew at an altitude of 1400 feet for about 8 minutes, according to the company. To get around on the ground, the wings fold up as the flying car transitions into ground mode.
While the $279,000 price tag may seem a little high for a car, it is actually very reasonable when compared to a brand new basic 4-seat Cessna Aircraft or some other general aviation airplanes. According to the company they have already taken close to one hundred deposits, at $10,000 each, for the first production models.
