Earlier this week, former NFL running back Tiki Barber announced that he wants to return to play in the league again. Barber had retired as the premier running back for the New York Giants four years ago, while his twin brother Ronde Barber continued to play as one of the leagues top defensive players with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“After seeing how much fun Ronde is still having, it re-ignited my fire, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was,” Barber told NFL Network’s and Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.
According to Barber’s agent, they have already file the required paperwork with the NFL to allow Tiki to make a return for the 2011 season. It is not certain at this time exactly which team would welcome Barber’s return to play.
The two Barbers had played together in college at the University of Virginia, but it is not clear whether Tampa Bay wants to see the two on their roster. Head coach Raheem Morris told The St. Petersburg Times he would not rule out bringing Tiki onboard, but he has yet to speak with the team’s general manager about the prospect.
While his former team retains the rights to Barber, who has two years remaining on his contract, the Giants said Tuesday that they will release Barber once the NFL and the NFL Players Association reach a new collective bargaining agreement.
