According to a recent report from the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. exports of advanced technology products (ATP) fell by 9 percent between 2008 and 2009. While this drop represents a reduction of about $25 Billion in exports, the drop is less severe than the reduction of exports not technology related.

According to the report, the decline on non-technology related exports during the same period was more than twice as much. The data is based on U.S. Census Bureau information collected in technology areas including aerospace, electronics, information and communications technology and life science, which comprise about 85 percent of advanced technology exports by the United States for 2010.

In the report, “U.S. Exports of Advanced Technology Products Declined Less Than Other U.S. Exports in 2009,” the NSF went on to say that U.S. ATP exports recovered in 2010 but lagged behind the growth of non-ATP exports. In 2010, U.S. ATP exports improved by 11 percent as compared to 2009, but other types of U.S. exports expanded at 23 percent, twice the rate of ATP exports.
